The story of St. Elisabeth, who was Landgravine of Thuringia in the 13th century, depicts a different life to the one we know from fairy tales.
Elisabeth cannot identify with the pomp at court, the tournaments and lavish feasts. She sees that the majority of the people live in misery. The young princess helps the poorest of the poor, cares for the sick, gathers the beggar children around her, feeds and clothes them and even plunders the court coffers during a famine in order to alleviate poverty. When her husband Ludwig died very young, Elisabeth left the Wartburg and from then on lived in complete poverty herself. But with a smile and humility she endures all the suffering.
The book makes it clear to children in a simple way that our standard of living cannot be taken for granted and that we are called upon to help people in need.
