One of the most famous monasteries in the world was named after this saint: St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai. The pious and learned young woman is said to have lived nearby, in the ancient port city of Alexandria, around the year 300. When the Roman emperor raged against the Christians there, Catherine fearlessly confronted him in order to persuade him to convert. The emperor tried many tricks to weaken her faith. Without success, he was no match for her erudition. In revenge, the pagan had the noble virgin killed. This representative statue shows the legendary saint as a wealthy woman with two traditional attributes. The book proves that she is the patron saint of philosophers, students and pupils, while the wheel bears witness to her martyrdom.
