O crux frutex salvificus - "Cross, thou tree of salvation" - this hymn by St. Bonaventure was the basis for the design of this richly decorated pewter cross.
St. Bonaventure, a disciple of St. Francis of Assisi, depicts the cross as a tree bearing Christ, the fruit of life - an antithesis to the tree of paradise, from which death came. The introductory and concluding stanzas - which are reproduced at the base of the cross, outside the four evangelists - illustrate this idea:
1. O crux frutex alvificus
vivo fonte rigatus
cuius flos aromaticus
fructus desideratus
His nos crux ciba dructibus
illustra cogitatus
sacris reple fulgoribus
hostis frane conatus
Restais duc itineribus
spira pios afflatus
sisque Deum timentibus
tranquillus vitae status.
O cross, you tree of salvation,
watered by living water,
whose blossom is fragrant
and whose fruit we see:
Feed us with these fruits, O cross,
enlighten our thinking,
fill us with holy light,
break the compulsion of the enemy.
Lead us into the right paths,
kindle piety in us,
and be for those who fear God
a sure support in life.
The individual scenes from the life of Jesus are summarized under this one thought: As divisions of the one mystery of redemption in the cross of Christ. They are arranged as follows on our cross: The side with the Name of Jesus monogram shows the scenes of the Incarnation, earthly life and Glory, the side with the Crucified One shows the Passion. The name of Jesus himself is surrounded by glorifying titles, as is the inner (rectangular) base of the cross. (The translations are not literal)
